The Biden administration has stated that it will ban travel to and from South Africa, where it appears the newly-dubbed “omicron” has its origins. The ban will go into effect on Monday.

Biden had previously criticized Donald Trump for implementing a travel ban in the early days of COVID, and had accused Trump of “hysterical xenophobia” for other travel bans.

Trump further diminished the U.S. in the eyes of the world by expanding his travel ban. This new “African Ban,” is designed to make it harder for black and brown people to immigrate to the United States. It’s a disgrace, and we cannot let him succeed. — Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) February 2, 2020
