As the controversy over vaccine mandates continues, one high-profile resignation in protest has been making the news: Allison Williams, who is now a former reporter for ESPN.

Williams spoke with Tucker Carlson’s show Tucker Carlson Tonight on Wednesday about her decision, which she says was “the most difficult decision of my life.”

Carlson gushed over Williams’ stand, speaking about the greater political significance at play as the nation engages in bitter disputes over the controversial mandates:

“ESPN, like a lot of big companies around the country, informed some employees that they would have to bow to Joe Biden’s vax mandates or leave, and some people did leave. I was so struck by your story because you were successful in what you were doing. You were in the job you wanted to be in, and so you gave up an awful lot to do what you did.”

During the interview, Williams said she loved her job but that she felt she had little choice in the matter but to leave her successful career reporting on college basketball and football due to the personal conflict over the mandate forcing the vaccine on her. Williams said that “there were a lot of tears shed” and “sleepless nights” over her difficult decision:

“This was the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make in my life. There were a lot of sleepless nights. There were a lot of tears shed leading up to making this decision, but ultimately I had to do what was best for my health individually.”

While explaining her decision, Williams admitted that the nation probably wouldn’t be crippled by the loss of a sports reporter:

“I am one of many across the country who lost their job because of a mandate. My impact on society? Not that significant, right? I’m a sports broadcaster. I understand that.”

However, for Williams, there was a bigger question of whether the mandates were truly effective in upholding the general well-being of the citizenry given that the policy has led to shortages of more essential public service staff such as health care workers and police across the nation, a policy that President Joe Biden is apparently just fine with.

“Let me ask you this: are we safer as a community with less police officers? Are we better off as a community when our hospitals are short-staffed because nurses are forced to leave their jobs over these mandates?” Williams asked.

Williams did take care to emphasize she was not anti-vaccine, but rather anti-mandate, saying “I want to make it clear I’m not anti-vax, but I am absolutely anti-mandate. These are wrong. It violates bodily autonomy.”

This concern with the mandate more than the vaccine itself segued into the last portion of her interview, where she wrapped it up by stating her concerns over the power of a few large organizations to try to force such decisions on the population:

“When we allow corporations or governments to tell us what is best for our health, that is a scary place to be. And I really felt compelled … to stand up and speak out against these mandates because I think, if we don’t, we really are opening ourselves up to some long-term ramifications of which we probably can’t even imagine at this time.”

While the decision did cost Williams her job at ESPN, her career isn’t necessarily over. The Daily Wire announced on Friday that it has picked her up as a reporter for their sports team.
