Bennie Thompson credits Mayorkas for ‘unwavering commitment to duty’

.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) stood by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during what he referred to as the “sham impeachment” Thursday.

As the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Thompson made his disagreement with the second impeachment hearing clear. The impeachment inquiry began last week in committee, with this most recent hearing referred to as “Voices for the Victims: The Heartbreaking Reality of the Mayorkas Border Crisis.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Mayorkas on critical homeland security issues facing the country and commend him for his unwavering commitment to duty even in the face of this sham impeachment,” Thompson said. “Again, this isn’t a real impeachment, it’s a predetermined preplanned partisan political stunt.”

Thompson railed against his Republican colleagues for refusing to “provide the department the funding it needs” and threatening to hold Mayorkas in contempt of Congress for not appearing at either hearing so far. The secretary has attempted to arrange possible dates to testify before the committee.

“I can’t help but wonder if Republicans are getting a bit desperate, especially after their hearing last week was a flop,” Thompson said.

Mayorkas was unable to attend Thursday due to scheduled meetings with Mexican officials. Chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) claimed to have sent “multiple requests” to Mayorkas to appear before the committee ahead of the first impeachment hearing. It remains to be seen when the secretary will testify.
