DC police cleared the George Washington University (GWU) Gaza camp early Wednesday morning, arresting nearly 40 people.

GWU had previously requested the police’s help in clearing the camp, with the police department denying the request unless "the behavior changes, then our procedures and our process might change."

33 people were arrested, DC police Chief Pamela Smith said in a news conference, with most being arrested for unlawful entry, according to NBC 4. At least one person was arrested for assault on an officer.

Police began working to clear the camp on Day 14 of the encampment just after 3 am.

DC police said in a statement that they removed protesters after a "gradual escalation in the volatility of the protest."

"The Department has worked to pursue non-arrest methods to deescalate tensions during this time and ensure the safety of the GW students and campus. Based on incidents and information, there has been a gradual escalation in the volatility of the protest. Therefore, this morning, working closely with the GW administration and police, MPD moved to disperse the demonstrators from the GW campus and surrounding streets."

One video showed a protestor yelling for encampment protestors to wake up, with an alarm sounding in the background.

The protestors at the camp were heard yelling "Free Palestine" toward the line of cops that slowly moved toward the camp.

"Everyone we're literally surrounded," the protestor filming was heard saying.
