In an interview with Sage Steele, independent candidate for president Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that women should be able to get abortions even up to the point of birth. As they discussed the issue, Steele asked if Kennedy believes abortion should be legal "even if it's full term."

"Even if it's full term," Kennedy said. He couched his comments within the framework of medical freedom and bodily autonomy. He repeatedly said that he does not trust the state to make these decisions.

"Every abortion is a tragedy," Kennedy said at the beginning of the conversation on the issue. "Many of them leave permanent trauma on a woman. But I think, ultimately, I don’t trust government to have a jurisdiction over people’s bodies. I think we should leave it to the woman, her pastor, and y'know, her spiritual advisers or her physician or whatever to make those decisions," he told Steele.

"I don’t think any woman has ever, ever in history, has said 'I'm going to have a baby — I'm going to get pregnant and carry that baby to eight months of term and then I'm going to terminate the pregnancy," he said. "I don't think anybody wants to do that."

"I don't trust the state and I think we need to trust the woman," he said.

"So in other words, keeping it as is, with Roe v. Wade having been overturned and leaving it up to the states to determine if and when a woman can have an abortion?" Steele asked.

"I wouldn't leave it to the states," Kennedy said. "I believe we should leave it to the woman, we shouldn't have government involved."

"Even if it's full term," Steele asked.

"Even if it's full term," Kennedy said.

In a Politico article in August 2023, Kennedy's campaign said Kennedy "does not support legislation banning abortion.
