At Least 146 Dead after Crowd Surge During Halloween Festivities in South Korea

Halloween celebrations turned deadly Saturday night as 146 people were crushed to death in a stampede incident in Seoul, South Korea, officials say.

Another 100 people were injured after large crowds flooded into a narrow street near Hamilton Hotel, a known party spot in Seoul’s Itaewon leisure district, the Associated Press reported. The death toll could rise as emergency workers continue to transport the injured to hospitals, according to Yongsan Fire Chief Choi Seong-beom. More than 800 emergency workers and police were deployed from across the country to treat the injured on Seoul’s streets.

Of those dead, 74 have been taken to hospital, with 46 bodies still on the streets, the fire chief said, according to the AP. Remaining bodies were being taken to a nearby gym for identification. An unknown number of the injured are in critical condition.
