Biden Admin Expected to Loosen Federal COVID Masking Guidelines as Omicron Variant Surge Appears to Have Peaked in U.S.

The Biden administration is expected Friday to loosen federal COVID-19 masking guidelines, as the surge in the virus’ omicron variant appears to have peaked in the U.S. and infection and hospitalization rates decline.

Most Americans will no longer be advised to wear masks in indoor public settings, according to the Associated Press.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will reportedly announce a change in the metrics it employs to assess whether to recommend face coverings. The agency will no longer focus on the total number of COVID cases and instead move to a more complete view that assesses the virus’ risk to a community.
