Serena Williams Announces She’s Retiring from Tennis

Serena Williams will be hitting her final tennis balls at the US Open.

The famed athlete, 40, announced in her September 2022 Vogue cover story published Tuesday that she will be retiring from the sport after the annual tournament to focus on building her family.

She and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, already share 4-year-old daughter Olympia.

“These days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter,” she wrote in a personal essay.

Williams, who is not yet pregnant with their second child, wrote that she is looking to have another baby — but only after her athlete days are behind her.

“In the last year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and we recently got some information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that whenever we’re ready, we can add to our family,” she explained.

“I definitely don’t want to be pregnant again as an athlete. I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet out.”
